1. Your bounce rate is sky-high
If visitors are leaving your site quickly after viewing only one page, then it is a clear indicator that your website isn’t engaging your audience effectively.
What does this mean?
Your content isn’t connecting with your visitors, your site is difficult to navigate, the content wasn’t what they were expecting from their search, or perhaps your page is loading too slowly. Any of these issues can frustrate people (we all have short attention spans these days!) and they’ll quickly hit the back button straight to your competitors.
What can you do about it?
Have a look at your website from a user’s perspective. What would they have searched for to find you? Are you addressing that in your content? Is your messaging clear immediately – so the hero section of your homepage – does it answer the question of what problem you solve, who you do it for and what the outcome is? Is it clear, or are you too abstract/clever?
How is your site navigation? Is it clear what you want people to do when they visit? Or is it all too overwhelming for them?
How quickly is your page loading? Check this on mobile and desktop. If your image or video is loading too slowly, people will click away.
If you’ve had a look at your site, and you’re still not sure why your bounce rate is high, ask a peer or colleague to give their opinion, or you can consider having a Website Review or Audit completed.
2. Your website isn't generating leads
Your website should be more than a digital brochure or business card. It should be actively generating leads for your business. If you are not receiving a steady flow of enquiries or sign ups to your mailing list, that is a problem.
What does this mean?
Your calls to action (CTAs) might be unclear, buried, or even non-existent. If you do have clear CTAs, it probably means that your site is not effectively communicating your value to potential clients, which is an issue with your messaging and content.
What can you do about it?
Review your CTAs—are they prominent, compelling, clear, and strategically placed throughout the site? Ensure each page has a clear purpose in your marketing funnel. If you don’t have a lead magnet on your site, consider creating and adding one.
PS. Also, check that your contact forms and funnels are working and that you are receiving enquiries!
3. You're embarrassed to share your website
If you cringe when you have to share your website address or make excuses for your site, it’s a massive sign that your site isn’t accurately representing your business and you’ve outgrown it.
What does this mean?
Your site may be outdated and have inaccurate information, your brand look and feel may have evolved and it doesn’t reflect how far your business has progressed.
What can you do about it?
It’s time for an honest assessment. Does your site truly represent your business and where you’re headed? Is it a powerful marketing tool that you’re proud to share? If not, it may be time to plan a redesign that accurately showcases your services, achievements, and brand.
4. Your site isn't mobile friendly
With more than half of all web traffic coming from mobile devices for most businesses, a site that doesn’t perform well on phones is going to seriously limit your success.
What does this mean?
With more than half of all web traffic coming from mobile devices for most businesses, a site that doesn’t perform well on phones is going to seriously limit your success.
What can you do about it?
You could be losing a significant portion of your audience. They will click away if the site is not legible on their device. It will also impact your search engine ranking as Google’s mobile-first indexing takes mobile responsiveness into consideration when crawling your site.
5. Your competitors are outranking you in search results
When was the last time you searched for your business on Google? Where do you rank for different search terms? Are you consistently on page one for your priority searches? If so, then your SEO strategy (or lack of) is likely to be holding you back.
What does this mean?
Potential clients are more likely to find and choose your competitors over you, simply because they are appearing first in search results.
What can I do about it?
You can have an SEO audit done of your site to see what you are missing, what can be improved and what changes you can make to improve your SEO ranking. If you have never done any extensive SEO before on your site, then your first priority should be an SEO Strategy. This will include keyword research, on-page optimisation, content recommendations, how to build backlinks. SEO is a long term strategy but the payoff in terms of organic traffic and leads is worth it.
Is it time for a website overhaul?
If you recognised your website in one or more of these signs, no need to panic. It just means that your business has evolved, and it's time for your website to keep up.
Your website should be your most powerful marketing tool, attracting clients and generating revenue. If it is not achieving this, then it may be time for a strategic overhaul.
Remember a website is more than just an attractive design. It needs to align with your business vision, marketing objectives, speaks directly to your ideal clients and drives real results.
